“We have seen the consumption of digital entertainment multiply and mobile gaming, in particular, emphatically increase in popularity and we wanted to contribute to that growth in the MENA region,” said a spokesperson from Bigo Live. “Online gaming is more than a platform to play games, but video games have the ability to broaden perspectives and build new communities by connecting people of all backgrounds and cultures who may not otherwise have met. Families, friends and gaming enthusiasts across the world have the space for digital interaction and collaborative play. We wanted to create space that could not only facilitate this, but also help identify and support some of the region’s best and most talented content creators.”

Gaming is already one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing entertainment industries, and its global growth has been dramatically accelerated during the lockdowns. The global buildout of 5G technology coupled with the adoption of smartphones with high-performance game streaming, has acted as a catalyst in the rapid growth of mobile gaming, allowing the industry to scale rapidly to an estimated growth of US $196 billion in 2022. Finally, the games themselves with the likes of Fortnite and PUBG mobile among many others have garnered a huge following in players.

As such, the World Health Organization and the video game industry have partnered up on #PlayApartTogether, a promotional campaign that encourages healthy physical distancing by bringing special events, exclusives, activities, rewards, and inspiration to some of the most popular games in the world in the effort to slow the spread of Covid-19. As online socialization is becoming the new normal, livestreaming platforms can provide gamers with support to continue to #PlayApartTogether in the post-pandemic world.

In the MENA region, Bigo Live already has a strong user base and successfully launched its first self-owned e-sports IP BIGOFUN in 2020. BIGOFUN acts as a platform providing gamers with an enjoyable competitive environment and covers all the popular games and different levels of tournaments. Since then, Bigo Live has held several popular gaming events as and the platform has seen a rise in gaming stars as there exists a strong fan base in MENA.

During the second quarter of 2020, the MAUs in the MENA region grew by over 30 percent and this growth is expected to continue as more people explore the possibilities, opportunities and celebrations that live streaming will bring.
